I sing and write songs and I am also a producer. I learned to play keyboard at a young age. I can only play by ear meaning I do not read music. I mix, edit and record all my own songs. I don't care much for editing and mixing my music because it is a tedious process. Making sure I've added enough treble. reverb, bass or have my vocals leveled is a daunting task for me but it must be done until I have my own studio engineer to do that for me. The one part of music I do enjoy is writing songs. I am a lyricist and writing lyrics takes me on an odyssey. I usually zone out and allow lyrics to pour out of my mind and unto my note pad. I usually have an ink pen tucked into my hair when I'm walking around my apartment in song writing mode. Imagine sleeping next to note pads and a pack of ink pens. I remember waking up in the past out of a dream with a song title in my head or a few lyrics and as I drifted back to sleep, when I wake up and can't remember the song. That's when I decided to keep a note pad next to me. I write all my own songs, but my hopes are obtaining a publishing placement so that I can write for other artist in the industry. When I was eleven years old, I remember being in my room writing songs while other children my age were outside playing. The first song I wrote was (I Got Love In My Heart) The lyrics were about having love. peace and joy within. I'm not sure if the song even rhymed, (smile) The lyrics were repetitive, but I was on to something and I liked it.
I can remember being in school during class with my head in a book during study time but laying on the table behind the book was a notepad, I would sneak and write songs during class. One day my teacher caught on to me and told me either you pay attention and pass this class, or you will repeat the fourth grade. I didn't' listen to that warning and guess what? The next year she kept true to her word. I had to repeat the fourth grade again and I learned my lesson, but I learned it to late. I decided to leave the songs writing alone until I got home from school. When I am writing songs, I usually make sure I clear my mind before writing. I like to have a clutter free environment. There have been times that I light incent to provide a delightful aroma. The one aspect of songwriting that I think every lyricist dreads is writer's block. That is when you are stuck trying to figure out which lyrics to add next. I don't encounter that often but when I do. I usually put down my pen and come back to my lyrics later. I have my own technique when it comes to writing songs. I always start with a title first. When I create the title then the lyrics follow. I also like to have the music track to accompany me if possible. Well, I guess I will close this blog. I don't like typing much and can't believe this blog is so lengthy. Thanks for reading my thoughts on songwriting. Peace and Unity.
